VSP - Discussion about the mutual interest on Biogeochemical impact of the Mekong River Plume on nutrient dynamics and developing the Cooperative Programme in Marine sciences...

Abstract

Discussion about the mutual interest on Biogeochemical impact of the Mekong River Plume on nutrient dynamics and developing the Co.Scientists from institute of oceanography (IO) and Georgia Technology Institute (GT) habe be working in several projects since 2006. They are recently joint apply several proposals for research in the South China Sea (SCS), including the incoming cruise in June 2016. The research waters is very interesting because of it~s influenced by different ecosystems/processes e.g. one of the largest world estuaries; an important coastal upwelling system in SCS; and has direct effects from ENSO. Theirresearch is involved in different aspects including oceanography, marine biology, and biogeochemistry and aims to understand effect and/or co-effect of different processes. With this visit, besides clarifying lots of details in setting up the framework for the incoming investigation, they can discuss the possible co-works on diversity and molecular analysis (e.g. genetic diversity and expression) of the least known pico and nanoplankton in the SCS over the transitional waters (eutrophic to oligotrophic, river to openwater, acrossing the upwelling waters and eddies, etc.) in different seasons; their interaction with physical and biogeochemical processes and climate variability. They also bring some samples to work in molecular laboratory at GeorgiaTech. There may be many common concerns over the research among IO, GT and other institutions, and it will be possible to share the useful knowledge through cooperative studies
