VSP - VSP to Garcia (Univ de Girona

Abstract

University of Girona requests funding from the ONRG Visiting Scientist Program to support travel to Caeasarea, Israel to meet with and explore collaborative opportunities with the US Naval Research Enterprise. Three potential future collaborators from Girona will travel to Caeasarea with several pieces of equipment including a Autonomous Unmanned Surface vehicles (ASV) and optical imaging hardware with unique high-resolution stereo underwater video capture capability that can produce detailed 3-Dimensional reconstruction and texture mapping of an underwater environment. The researchers from Girona will also work with other ONR/ ONRG sponsored participants in this effort to produce panoramic video from heterogeneous data sets. Furthermore, when combined with head mounted displays from the other USN-sponsored research onsite, this will provide a level of immersion fully aligned with the goals of this project. This proposed visit will leverage from a joint effort between other DoD funded research and the Israel Antiquities Authority (Israel Research funding) which will provide logistics support (including ships, cranes, etc. that will support the equipment/ process for the Croatian PIs). US Navy participants include Office of Naval Research, SPAWAR-Pacific and the Program Officers from the Naval Research Laboratory. This visit will enable exploration of future research ideas and real time operational testing with several Autonomous Unmanned Surface vehicles (ASVs) equipped with variety of remote sensing payload and other sensors of interest to the NRE. Participation may also enable real time development of new algorithms and possibly data acquisition strategies of interest to the US Naval Research Enterprise. The PIs will bring several pieces of equipment to the test site to explore future research possibilities. VSP funds requested are for three PIs and funds to ship USVs and other equipment to participate in the event. Expected future outcome will be a white paper detailing the effort and possibly a future NICOP proposal.
