CSP -The 19th European Conference on Mathematics for Industry (ECMI 2016)

Abstract

The 19th European Conference on Mathematics for Industry (ECMI 2016)The conference has selected as outstanding set of invited speakers to give talks of recent progress in applying mathematics to key problems in numerous important fields including fluid mechanics, nanotechnology and related technology areas. Most of the invited speakers are European, but to strengthen US European interactions, four US speakers have been selected. No ONRG funding will be provided to these speakers. The European have been leaders in applying mathematics to model industrial problems and it is important to capture both the mathematical techniques, strategy and philosophy utilized in Europe. This is the most important European conference regarding technology transfer dealing with matters of modeling, simulation, statistics, and big data and optimization. This impacts the Navy in many ways. For example, to design engineering resilient systems, it is critical to have the right mathematical models and approximation techniques to understand how systems will operate over a range of operating conditions. Mathematical modeling is the most inexpensive way to get this understanding. This will be coordinated with Code 31 program officers. The cost requests are reasonable and the application of the ONRG funds for European speakers only and other meeting and publication costs is appropriate. While the request is a valid request for 22,393.59, I recommend a proposed award of 12,500 due to overall ONR Global constraints on total funding.
