CSP - 11th Student Autonomous Vehicle Challenge - Europe (SAUC-E) 2016

Abstract

11th Student Autonomous Vehicle Challenge - Europe (SAUC-E) 2016The Student Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Challenge Europe (SAUC-E) event has been jointly supported by ONR since 2008. This provides a multi-disciplinary event for autonomous underwater robotics. This event provides a unique opportunity for participants to engage with professionals and for US Navy participants to engage with the up and coming students and professors from some of the best EU programs. Unlike other competitions, this event is held in a harbor which requires teams to deliver platforms and systems that can operate in a realistic, challenging environment. The rules are adjusted each year to address real-world challenges. The teams are pushed to develop sonar and acoustic communication capabilities. Innovative technologies are demonstrated that be of a benefit to the US Navy. Many US NRE collaborators will participate as judges. This provides an opportunity for US Navy personnel to evaluate and identify leading underwater vehicle researchers and technologies from the European community. This event will also give US Navy participants to network with other Navies, as well as professionals from the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE). Importantly the SAUC-E event encourages open source codes to be shared with other SAUC-E participants as well as other AUVSI participants. This event also provides an opportunity to increase Global Technical Awareness of Italy and other participants. This event is jointly funded by Jason Stack (ONR Code 32) and Kelly Cooper (ONR Code 33).
