CSP - Financial Support for the 9th International Workshop on Zinc Oxide and Related Materials (IWZnO 2016)

Abstract

Financial Support for the 9th International Workshop on Zinc Oxide and Related Materials (IWZnO 2016):a. Technical: Established in 1999, the IWZnO conference series has been held once every two years with the location rotating around North America, Europe, and Asia. Although the initial focus was solely on ZnO, an ultraviolet band gap semiconductor easily synthesized in high quality crystalline form, in recent years the scope of the conference has extended to other oxide semiconductors (e.g. ZnMgO, IGZO, ZnCdO, BaSnO3, GIZO), several of which appear poised to have significant impact in dual-use applications. The workshop in 2016 covers bulk crystal growth, epitaxial thin film growth, quantum confined structures, band structure, optical properties, surface and interface electronic properties, defect identification, and control and modeling of oxide semiconductors. It also covers the applications in spintronics, transistors, TFTs, high frequency electronics, optoelectronic devices, piezoelectrics, acousto-optics, and bio/chemical sensors. b. Relevance: ZnO and related materials are a key component in many electronics and optoelectronics devices. The workshop and the resulted scientific exchange will contribute to the knowledge for the Naval S&T Strategic Plan~s focus areas of Electromagnetic Maneuver Warfare, Information Dominance~Cyber, and Power and Energy.c. Coordination: ONR 31 and Dr. Christopher Drew of ITC-PACd. Desired Outcome: (1) meaningful information exchange and discussion of research ideas, (2) up-to-date information on technology status, and (3) collection of meeting material for future reference and analysis.
