NICOP - Laser Initiation of EMs

Abstract

The NICOP, "Control of Sensitivity of Energetic Materials to Initiation via Laser Irradiation" has been submitted by Dr. Anatoliy Mitrofanov, Kemerov State University, Russia. The NICOP resulted from his visit through a VSP to the University of Maryland in July 2014, where in addition to scientists at the University he met with researchers from ONR, NRL, and NSWC - Indian Head. Dr. Mitrofanov was accompanied by Mr. Anton Zverev, Kemerovo State University, who also presented a paper at an international conference on energetic materials (EM) which ONRG co-funded through a CSP. This NICOP (as were the VSPs) is supported by Dr. Clifford Bedford, Code 35. The purpose of the NICOP is to study EMs which are mixed with small amounts of metal oxides in order to allow for laser initiation, as well as make them more insensitive to external stimuli. The project will establish the foundation upon which the nature of an EM-oxide interface structure and the laser-induced EM-oxide interactions are combined to design energetic formulations resistant to thermal or shock-loading conditions. In addition, the project will give a better understanding of how to develop highly controllable initiation of surface chemistry and hence for tunable sensitivity of EMs. If successful, the NICOP could lead to the elimination of components which use sensitive primary explosive devices.
