CSP - Scientific workshop with the title Delocalized Electrons in Atomic and Molecular Nanoclusters , organized at the Ettore Majorana Center in Erice, Sicily, Italy.

Abstract

Scientific workshop with the title Delocalized Electrons in Atomic and Molecular Nanoclusters , organized at the Ettore Majorana:a. Technical: A wide range of important effects in nanoscience are connected with the presence of delocalized and mobile electrons. This conference focuses on nanoclusters, which are important candidate systems for exploring quantum effects and reaction pathways. They exhibit a range of phenomena which are highly sensitive to the characteristics of delocalized electrons, such as mobility, screening, response, direct and exchange interactions, correlations, etc. The effects translate into properties that are of interest both in fundamental science and practical applications. The discussion of these phenomena, however, was often scattered among different meetings and hence lack the critical mass to foster constructive dialogs. The aim of the present event is to bring together researchers in different physical science fields to examine recent and future developments. To keep the discussion focused, it will concentrate on free clusters and related systems. This CSP was initiated by Dr. John Zimmerman of ONRG Prague. b. Relevance: The topic of the conference has implications on a broad range of Naval applications, including electronics with tunable spectral capability, catalysts for fuels and energetics, hydrogen storage media, solar cells, and the prediction of atmospheric processes. The scientific exchange will contribute to the Naval S&T Strategic Plan~s focus areas of Electromagnetic Maneuver Warfare, Power and Energy, and Assure Access to the Maritime Battlespace. c. Coordination: ONR 31, 32 and 33 d. Desired Outcome: (1) meaningful information exchange and discussion of research ideas, (2) up-to-date information on technology status, and (3) collection of meeting material for future reference and analysis.
