CSP - Japan-US Technical Information Exchange Forum on Blast Injury

Abstract

Japan-US Technical Information Exchange Forum on Blast Injury:. Technical: Blast-related traumatic brain injury (TBI) presents a challenging problem to the medical research community because of the complexity of the brain, and the many variables associated with the mechanisms of brain injury. Japan-US Technical Information Exchange Meeting is organized by the US Army and Japan s National Defense Medical College with US Navy s assistance. In spite of its importance and many years of research, the current understanding of blast injury mechanisms is limited. Moreover, the link between primary injury biomechanics, the neurobiology of secondary injury and repair, and the resultant neuropsychological and neurodegenerative outcomes remains elusive. This Forum is aimed to leverage the expertise of the two countries to accelerate the research in the prevention, treatment, rehabilitation of blast injuries and the continuum of care for the injured from acute treatment to return to duty. The Forum objectives include: (a) start a Japan-US dialogue focused on multi-disciplinary science and medicine necessary to increase our understanding of blast injury, (b) achieve a mutual understanding of US/Japan efforts in blast injury research, (c) identify knowledge gaps requiring collaborative research, and (d) identify mutual interests in the prevention, clinical diagnosis and treatment of brain, lung and auditory blast injuries. The Forum participants are limited to only researchers from Japan and the US. b. Relevance: The topic of the Forum is of high importance to the protection of warfighters. The symposium and the resulted scientific exchange will contribute to the knowledge for the Naval S&T Strategic Plan~s focus area of Warfighter Performance. c. Coordination: Dr. Timothy Bentley of ONR 342, Dr. Amit Bagchi of NRL 6350, Dr. Kyungho Park of ITC-PAC, and Dr. Jason Wong of ONRG Tokyo d. Desired Outcome: (1) meaningful information exchange and discussion of research ideas, (2) up-to-date information on technology status, and (3) collection of meeting material for future reference and analysis.
