NICOP - Subsurface identification of Biostructures(cytoskeleton) and Nanomaterials (carbon nanotubes and graphene) interfaces
Abstract
Subsurface identification of Biostructures(cytoskeleton) and Nanomaterials (carbon nanotubes and graphene) interfaces:a. Technical: The proposal plans to study the interaction between Cell Biostructure and Nanomaterials. The Nanomaterials in the form of wearables, medical implants, drug delivery offers different interaction with cell structure and characterizing the cell reaction through not just EFM photographs but electrostatic characterizations. The research would be primarily conducted by a phd candidate (Dr Fernando Pastrana) and his advisor (Dr Alba Avila). The phd candidate currently has his MD and has 2-3 years left in his phd. He very bright and capable. The advisor, Dr Alvia had been previously funded by a CSP that held a successful large nanomaterials conference with Purdue University in 2013. b. Relevance: Why does ONR/NRE/DON care? With an increase in nanomaterials in use in wearables and additive manufacturing, understanding the cell interaction will be important. c. Working to coordinate the findings to Laura Kinner, ONR 34. d. Desired outcome will be published reports and journals shared with relevant stakeholders.
