NICOP - Aspects of African Languages for Application to Translation Tools

Abstract

Aspects of African Languages for Application to Translation Tools. This project will perform research on Hausa and Twi as part of an effort to improve language databases that are being developed as part of the DARPA Lorelei program. A graduate student will work both in Ghana and with the Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL) at the University of Maryland. Hausa is a Chadic language of the Afro-Asiatic language family. It is one of the major languages spoken in West Africa. Twi on the hand is native to Ghana, and is the dialect of Akan that is spoken primarily in the central and south eastern part of Ghana. Tone and intonation of these languages will be studied, as well as how native speakers of these languages learn English. These data will be used to analyze the afore-mentioned databases.
