VSP - Branicki_VSP-Colloborations at UNC, ORNL on Lagrangian Data Assimilation

Abstract

VISITING SCIENCE PROGRAM PROPOSAL:The proposed visitor Dr Michal Branicki is an outstanding investigator--a potentially rising star early in his career- at the University of Edinburgh who is working in the mathematical field of Lagrangian Data Assimilation: how does one incorporate sparse real time measurements that are gathered from the flow field to improve numerical models and therefore predicted output for a wide range of atmospheric and oceanic modeling problems of interest to the Navy. During this visit to Chris Jones at UNC, currently supported by Reza Malek Madani, and to Kody Law he intends to collaborate on the problem of sea ice modeling, an area of special interest to the Navy and a potential new programmatic thrust for Reza. I have reviewed the costs and they seem reasonable. A rental to get between Chapel Hill and Oak Ridge and to be able to get out to Oak Ridge National Labs seems the most cost effective and time effective way to proceed. Per diem and lodging costs are within government allowable rates. I trust that this visit will lead to new collaboration and the understanding of the way to proceed to model sea ice problems in the Arctic.
