NICOP - Project CulturalCrowds (CC)
Abstract
Project CulturalCrowds (CC)Phase IIa. Project will work on solidifying a cultural analysis tool kit that is being developed for analyzing video of crowds. It will look at different types of models and will incorporate a sociologist to incorporate a solid set of cultural explanations for certain behaviors (as opposed to stereotypes). The goal of the project is to be able to develop tools that can aid in engagements where culture can influence the behavior of a crowd- and in understanding these cultural drivers, DOD personnel working with the crowd can react accordingly. b. DOD forces engage with a variety of international groups, not just hostile forces. This is especially true on disaster relief missions (Haiti, Liberia, etc). However, given that these engagements are driven by seemingly random events, it is impossible to train the forces ahead of time to understand the cultural landscape into which they will be placed. Developing tools that can provide immediate engagement is therefore of utmost use. c. Code 34 (Rebecca Goolsbly) d. Advancement in tools to help DOD personnel engage with foreign populations
