VSP - Trip to the Courant Institute, NYC for Michal Branicki

Abstract

VISITING SCIENCE PROGRAM PROPOSAL:This is a trip for Professor Michal Branicki to continue his research collaboration with Prof Andrew Majda at the Courant Institute on modeling the incorporation of real time data into large scale scientific computing models for improving accuracy. This is an important contribution to a large MURI project that Majda runs for Reza. Majda is considered the leading US applied mathematician by many and Branicki is a rising star so this is a very important contribution to facilitate. It s important that Majda s ideas get transferred to the next generation of mathematicians and this VSP will help enable that. This is an important capability for Navy modeling of important ocean, atmospheric phenomena. I saw both Majda and Branicki at a recent conference on Uncertainty Quantification and their presentations there and the discussed that followed assure me that this will be an important interaction
