NICOP - INVESTIGATING THE ROLES OF HUMAN HIPPOCAMPAL SUB-FIELDS USING HIGH-RESOLUTION NEUROIMAGING

Abstract

INVESTIGATING THE ROLES OF HUMAN HIPPOCAMPAL SUB-FIELDS USING HIGH-RESOLUTION NEUROIMAGING:The hippocampus serves as the central brain structure responsible for encoding and retrieval of long-term memory, but it is often challenging to examine hippocampal sub-fields in humans to gain a better understanding of functional connectivity changes during learning. This research will serve to develop high-resolution neuroimaging techniques to enable high-resolution fMRI scanning. Participants will be recruited from chronically stressed (e.g., police officers) vs. non-stressed populations and be exposed to acute stressors during a learning task. The high-resolution imaging techniques will be coupled with new techniques to examine functional connectivity in the brain to gain a detailed understanding of how acute and chronic stress alters patterns of hippocampal connectivity and learning. RELEVANCE: Results from this project can be used to advance the field of neuroscience by refining neuroimaging techniques and improving algorithms to explore functional connectivity. Applying these techniques to the hippocampus to understand how stress affects learning and memory has numerous affects for the NRE and DOD, including using these results to understand individual warfighter stress levels and determine how their performance may be affected. ONR/NRE/DOD COORDINATION: This effort has been reviewed by Dr. Monique Beaudoin (ONRG-London), Dr. Harold Hawkins (ONR34), and LtCol Brian Lutz (AOARD). OUTCOME: The outcome of this program will be 7-10 manuscripts over the three-year course of this program, along with numerous conference presentations. Additionally, several graduate students will likely aid in this project, resulting in student training.
