NICOP - SOCIAL COMPLEXITY AND CRITICAL STATES OF SOCIETY: FROM UNDERLYING SOCIAL MECHANISMS TO POLITICAL CRISES IN CHILE.

Abstract

SOCIAL COMPLEXITY AND CRITICAL STATES OF SOCIETY: FROM UNDERLYING SOCIAL MECHANISMS TO POLITICAL CRISES IN CHILE.This project proposes to measure structural properties of social networks and relate these to social crises, using the political-elite system of Chile as a source of data. This has become more interesting in recent months given the series of social and political crises which have emerged in Chile related to education, corruption, and widespread violent crime. A deeper understanding of the influence of network structure on the development of these crises will allow the development of meaningful metrics and hopefully predictive algorithms which can be applied to other networks having similar properties. I met the PI a year ago and brought him to Arlington on a VSP where he met with Rebecca Goolsby from ONR 34, Kathleen Carley from Carnegie-Mellon University, and Ben Knott from AFOSR. The final form of the proposal was developed based on discussions with them. Rebecca is interested in the project but did not have enough funds to co-fund it, but Ben Knott has agreed to fund half.
