CSP - The 11th General Meeting of ACCMS-VO

Abstract

During the "International Workshop on Materials Design by Computer Simulation at Atomic and Electronic Levels", held at the Sendai International Center, during August 18-19, 2000 as part of the "International Symposium on Research and Education in the 21st Century -- The Role of Inter-University Academic and Student Exchange (ISRE2000)", Prof. Y. Kawazoe of the Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University, Sendai (at that time), proposed to enhance corporation in Asian region in the area of computational materials science. After mutual consultations among leading scientists in Asia, it was proposed to form an "Asian Consortium on Computational Materials Science (ACCMS)". Accordingly, we welcome active workers to join this consortium and send their suggestions on various aspects to make it successful in strengthening corporation in Asian region. Based on the experience in ACCMS, in 2006 we decided to start virtual organization (VO) on the Internet to encourage stronger collaboration in Asia for computational material design using computational resources located in specific institutions in Asia for the members of ACCMS. This idea was successfully accepted by the community, and a number of researchers have joined us. Next requirement was to meet face to face to exchange information directly to construct concrete relationship among the members and we started the annual international conference. The purposes of ACCMS-VO are: (1). Realize "Asian Consortium on Computational Materials Science(ACCMS) - Virtual Organization" as advanced and expansive ACCMS, and (2). Recognize IMR, Tohoku University and other leading organizations in Asia as important centers at international level through the use of a high-speed network. To be able to organize annual international conference for the members of ACCMS-VO of about 150 registered participants, it is necessary to be funded continuously. In these 10 years, we have been successfully supported by the government and private sources and using these supports to invite around 40 foreign and 60 domestic researchers each year. For the ACCMS-VO11 expected to be held in 2016 in Sendai, since the members of the ACCMS-VO is expanding, size of the conference is expected to be with more than100 participants, and we would like to request organizations related to this conference for financial and organizational supports. US Navy support is expected for this conference on computational materials science, which is a growing field over the world, and important contribution from Asian region should be kept.New materials change the world; especially new weapons and other high-tech devices all depend on new materials. Recent progress in computer simulation makes it possible to design and predict new useful materials which match to the requirements from US Navy or any other advanced technology organizations.
