NICOP- OCA project Implantation of an Observatory in the Amazon Coast

Abstract

The Amazon coastal zone is characterized by the presence of two large estuaries: the estuary of the Amazon and Par~ River. Most sampling efforts of northern Brazil aim to understand oceanographic processes in the estuary of the Amazon River and its relations with the solid and liquid discharge. However, the estuary of the Par~ River is among the largest in Brazil, with a mouth approximately 60 km that is highly dynamic. Data acquisition is therefor sparce because of the logistical difficulties of access to the region inherent to the size of water bodies and the high cost of acquisition and maintenance of the instruments. This proposal is the implementation of the first phase of the Observatory of the Amazon Coast, which we intend to develop in network installation steps for new stations, in order to form an automatic acquisition network and provision of meteorological and oceanographic data to the interested scientific community in research region, serving as a subsidy to various areas of knowledge. The first Observatory station foresees continuous monitoring and real-time input parameters such as water level, water temperature and air, intensity and direction of wind, precipitation and especially salinity
