NICOP - Large acoustic array deployment for the FY17 Seabed Characterization Experiment

Abstract

Project AbstractIt is expected that an Office of Naval Research funded Seabed Characterization Experiment (SBCX) will occur in the spring of 2017. The research objective is the characterization of mud sediments and the effects of mud sediments on acoustic propagation in shallow water. There is a requirement for deployment of a large acoustic array to meet the scientific objectives of the experiment. The Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) owns and operates a research array suitable for the purpose. We propose to deploy a long horizontal line array (HLA) at the seabed at one site to collect noise from ships of opportunity in nearby major shipping lanes (and from other sources) for a period of four weeks. We seek to deploy the array in an area where subsequent inversion can discriminatea predominantly-mud area (an area of a relatively thick mud cover) from a predominantly-sand area (an area of relatively thin or no mud cover). This proposal concerns the sea trial and efforts by FFI in array preparation and deployment, array retrieval, data download, quality check and distribution.Principle Investigator:Dag Tollefsen, Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI), NO-3183 Horten NorwayEmail: Dag.Tollefsen@ffi.no, Phone: +47 33033815Collaborators:David P.
