CSM - S.P.U.M.S ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING - THE MEDICAL IMPLICATIONS OF COMMERCIAL DIVING
Abstract
The South Pacific Underwater Medicine Society (SPUMS) was founded in 1971 and the purposes of the Society have remained unchanged si"nce its inception: To facilitate the study of all aspects of underwater and hyperbaric medicine, to provide information onunderwate""r and hyperbaric medicine, to publish a journal and to convene members of theSociety annually at a scientific meeting. It is at the"" annual scientific meeting that activities and lectures are planned to inform, educate and to develop fellowship and friendship amon"gst members.SPUMS plays a pivotal role in diving safety in Australia and New Zealand. It is the premier non-government organization advising on State and Federal legislation and is represented on all Australian and New Zealand Standards Diving and Hyperbaric comm"ittees.SPUMS holds a Scientific Meeting every year, which provides a forum for presentations and discussion of Diving and Hyperbari""c Medicine research, cases, position statements, educational media, information updates and practical workshops. Attendees included""octors, nurses, chamber technicians, engineers, scientists, students and divers who work or share an interest in the fields of divin""g and hyperbaric medicine, as well as representatives from the recreational and occupational diving industries and military diving o"rganisations.SPUMS position statements summarize current literature relating to specific areas of diving medicine. A recent example was the SPUMS Joint Position Statement on Persistent Foramen Ovale and Diving (https://www.spums.org.au/sites/default/files/2015-"06%20SPUMS_Joint%20positionPW.pdf), which evolved from the 2014 annual scientificmeeting held in Bali in 2014.SPUMS also makes si"gnificant contributions to recreational diving safety. SPUMS has produced the gold standard reference for recreational diving medica"ls in Australasia, which also had its inception and revisions at the SPUMS annual scientific meeting.The 2017 SPUMS Annual Scienti""fic meeting theme is ~The medical implications of Commercial Diving~. The invited keynote speaker is Dr Debbie Pestell, MD. LCdr RCN"" (ret~d), Hyperbaric, Diving and Submarine Medicine Consultant, QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax Canada.Presentations by the gu""est speaker will include Principles of Mixed Gas and Saturation Diving, Chronic Dysbaric Disorders: Long Term Health Effects of divi""ng, Medications and Diving, Fitness to Dive Standards, Assessment and Contraindications, amongst others. Updates on the latest recom"mendations for diving safety and diving medicals will also be discussed at this meeting.Two additional workshops will be run at the" annual scientific meeting, which provide opportunity for hands-on diver focussed echocardiography.Invited speakers are selected fo"r their in-depth knowledge of a diving-related topic and many themes have been covered over the years.
