NICOP - The design of the Sao Paulo Ocean Observing and Prediction System - Part 2 (SPOOPS-2)

Abstract

The objective of the project SPOOPS is to develop an integrated system of oceanographic, and meteorological, sensors and hydrodynami""c forecasting models to allow for the real-time assessment of ocean, weather, environmental, and vessel traffic conditions throughou""t the coast of Sao Paulo state, and forecast of conditions in the near and long-term. SPOOPS is a collaboration between the Coastal"" Hydrodynamics Laboratory (LHiCo) from the Oceanographic Institute, University of Sao Paulo and the Davidson Laboratory of the Steve"ns Institute of Technology to create such a forecast system. The objective of SPOOPS-2 is to continue the activities started during" SPOOPS-1, both projects having the same scientific and academic objectives. Coordinators of SPOOPS-2 are Belmiro M. Castro, from LH""iCo, and Alan F. Blumberg, from Davidson Laboratory. A numerical grid was designed during SPOOPS-1 to cover the South Brazil Bight f""rom Cabo Frio (22.9~S) to Santa Marta (28.6~S) and from the coast to the continental slope (2000 m maximum depth), encompassing the"" Sao Paulo State inner shelf. This large grid is necessary for bringing remote influences (Brazil Current, middle shelf wind driven"" currents, along coast advection of low salinity waters, tidal currents) to the study area in the Sao Paulo State inner shelf. Ther""e will be two high resolution grids nested in this large grid: one in the Santos-Sao Vicente-Bertioga estuarine system, and another" in the Sao Sebastiao Channel. The Stevens Estuarine and Coastal Ocean Model (sECOM) with its various dynamic modules is being implemented in those grids for studying the circulation and other physical processes in the Sao Paulo State inner shelf. The external for"cing is being taken from global atmospheric (winds, air pressure, ocean-atmosphere heat and mass fluxes), tidal (most energetic comp"onents) models and global ocean models (MERCATOR). River outflows in the Santos-Sao Vicente-Bertioga estuarine system will be taken from the available data banks while those transports are not monitored.
