CSP - 17th International Biodeterioration and Biodegradation Symposium, to be held in Manchester, England, from 6 to 8 September, 2017
Abstract
International Biodeterioration and Biodegradation Symposium 17 (IBBS 17), 6 - 8 September,2017, to be held in the Business School o""f Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), UKThe International Biodeterioration and Biodegradation symposia are aimed at showcasin"g theimpact of industrial and academic activities in these two areas on the environment. They promoteinteraction between industrie"s, academia and local government bodies concerned with the positiveand negative effects of living organisms on materials and proces""ses. The first internationalsymposium took place in Portsmouth in1968. Since then, triennial events have been held in manyEuropean"" countries, as well as in the USA and Canada. The last Symposium (IBBS16) took place in~~d~, Poland in 2014, and had the major them"e of biodeterioration and protection of worldwidecultural heritage. The theme of IBBS17 is Preservation andProtection of Materials.IBBS17 will contribute to the US Naval or Marine Corp Science & Technology Plan through inclusionon the program of sessions on biocorrosion and biodeterioration and biodegradation of hydrocarbonfuels and biofuels. Control methods for biofilms in fuel systems a"nd seawater, as well as in otherecologically important areas, will include impacts of molecular biology and synthetic biology.Mode""rn and emerging methods for investigation and control of damaging organisms and processes, such as those found in biofilms and biofo""uling, will be an important aspect of the conference.Already there have been submissions of papers dealing with~ The biodegradatio""n of oils in the marine environment following the Deepwater Horizondisaster, which has direct relevance to possible future spillage"s from ocean-bound vessels aswell as fixed structures~ The use of structurally complex diterpenoids as anti-fouling agents~ Synthetic biological solutions for control of marine biofouling~ Marine fouling in cold water oceansThe sessions of the symposium will" enhance the research effort in these areas and, it is hoped, attract new investigators to the field.
