NICOP - Quantitative 3D measurements of shoaling and breaking internal waves using SAS imagery

Abstract

Realistic but false features, such as sand waves and ridges, in acoustic images of the seabed, caused by disturbances in the refractive index of water have only been recently identified in high resolution SAS images.b. They are interesting scientifically and may degrade the performance of MCM sonars.c. This work is coordinated with Code 32, specifically Reginald Beach, who is funding a US PI to collaborate with the Norwegian PI, to study this problem, and look for solutions.d. The desired outcome is a quantitative model of the false features, and verification through data-model comparisons.
