NICOP - Amazon shelf break carbonate reefs
Abstract
This research will initiate with literature data search on the Pirabas in order to understanding its constitution and depositional e"nvironment. Several studies as Amorim (2016), Aguilera et al. (2014), Brito and Soares (2014) and T~vora et al. (2010) have already"" been done, but comparison of these rocks with modern carbonate reefs is yet to be performed. Field trip to outcrops of the carbon""ate rocks will be organized with specialists in order to observe, take measurements and collecting samples for comparison with moder"n reef building organisms. Most of outcrops are locate at the littoral of Para State and no more than 150 km away from Bel~m. In some areas the carbonate rocks of Pirabas Formation is mined for cement and have good exposure. The field trip is schedule for month of October due to dry season and consequently better exposure of outcrops. The Pirabas Formation also occurs at the beach and for that a spring tide period should be observed in order to have better exposure.Acquisition of bathymetric and shallow seismic data at the modern reefs area from surveying companies. The leasing of oil fields exploration blocks requires investigation of bottom morphology with multibeam bathymetry and shallow seismic surveys. These data could be acquired with surveys companies.Multibean data obtained with U.S. Research Vessel Atlantis in 2012 ANACONDA/ROCAcruise led by Dr. Patricia Yager will be available.Data compilation of bottom sediment types and organization in a data bank. These data is already available from past research in the area.Processing o"f bathymetric, shallow seismic and sediment types distribution to generate maps. The processing of this data will done at participat"ing universities.Organization of a seminar to discuss resultsPublication of resultsResearch will be developed by a group of students and researches from Brazilian and USuniversities.
