NICOP - Cognitive Radio Single Board Computer for Organic Sensing

Abstract

This project aims to develop a communications platform to build an optimized network of decentralizedand collaborative nodes. The o"bjective is to research and develop a cognitive radio, i.e. a selfconfigurablecommunication network with organic sensing, capable o""f identifying neighboring nodesand the best communication channel, frequency and protocol to be used at any given moment, basedon"" Software Defined Radio (SDR) technologies. With respect to the self-configuration part, we plan toinvestigate an organic sensing a""pproach. In this context, organic means a nature-inspired approach tosolve the problem will be utilised. It is possible, for exampl""e, to explore aspects of Swarm Intelligence, where a distributed collection of entities cooperate to achieve a common goal with a hi""gh degree ofoptimality, that a single entity would not be capable of achieving alone. In our case, the goal is theoptimal utilizat""ion of RF resources under the UHF range, and the cooperating entities can be any radiobasedcommunication system. When these entitie""s can sense the RF environment and adapt tofrequency ranges that are under-utilised, the whole system benefits.
