CSP - Singapore Traumatic Brain Injury Meeting 2017

Abstract

The Singapore Traumatic Brain Injury Meeting 2017 will bring together a list of leading experts inthe field, attempting to address"" the whole spectrum of disease from prevention to intervention, from bench to bedside. There will also be a specific focus on neuro-""inflammation and its role inacute and chronic effects of TBI, a key frontier in TBI research, as we leverage on leading scientists""in this area who are invited to speak at this meeting. This meeting is the first of its kind in Singapore and the region, organized" through a collaborativeeffort between 2 major university medical institutions (the National University Health System andLee Kong" Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University), that brings together localand leading overseas academic and practicin""g clinicians, as well as scientists, involved in the clinicalcare, translational research, and basic science research in the preven""tion, triage, management andrehabilitation of traumatic brain injury. The meeting also specifically aims to invite and involvememb""ers of the local and U.S. defense community in the organization and conduct of this meeting,as this disease is exceptionally releva""nt to the defense community.1. The key objectives of this meeting include:(1) updates on challenges, strategies and frontiers in m"anagement and research in traumatic braininjury- the meeting will provide an invaluable opportunity for researchers and clinicians" to presenttheir experiences and best practices, as well as identify critical barriers and challenges throughdiscussion and debate"", and in doing so,(2) foster collaboration for further research in traumatic brain injury between local andinternational groups, e"specially among clinicians and scientists. There are few meetings worldwidethat has a sole focus on traumatic brain injury each yea"r, and to our knowledge, this is the first ofits kind and scale in Asia involving both clinicians and scientists.(3) focus on the" role of neuroinflammation and its therapeutic targets in managing traumatic braininjury ~ the inflammatory process in secondary brain injury is a well known but poorly characterisedentity. The modulation of the neuroinflammatory process in traumatic brain injury has beenthought to be key in mitigating the adverse effects of secondary brain injury. Identification ofbiomarkers allows for a" targeted approach to diagnosis and therapeutics in this heterogenousdisease, that varies greatly in epidemiology, clinical progres"s and outcome.
