42nd Annual Condensed Matter and Materials Meeting
Abstract
The annual Wagga Wagga conference is the national gathering of Australasian researchers in condensed matter physics. The conference aims to provide an oppeortunity for scientists and postgraduate students to meet and discuss science in a relaxed and informal atmosphere, and to encourage collaboration. The purpose of the Wagga is to offer an accessible means for scientists to interact over a concentrated few days. As such, one of the key drivers of the conference has been to keep costs low. Wagga Wagga was historically chosen as the ‘center of mass’ of the research community in Australia, minimizing the overall travel costs to the reasearchers and providing a low entrance threshold particularly to students is the top priority. The meeting follows a standard academic conference format, with a number of invited keynote speakers, contributed oral presentations and posters. Students are encouraged to deliver oral presentations in order to build experience and recognition within the community, which is dilute; the Wagga is the often the only national event that gathers the research cohort into the same venue. The main outcome is the forging of new collaborative links between condensed matter researchers in Australia and New Zealand, which in turn will lead to joint projects, supervisions, papers, and advancements of the frontiers of research. Past conferences have been extremely effective at achieving these outcomes, and QUT has a duty of care to ensure that the meeting maintains its continuity and relevance to the researchers in the field.
