NICOP - Experimental Analysis of Coherent Vortical Structures Behind Fixed and Moving Blunt Bodies
Abstract
The main objective of the present project is to increase the knowledge about the physicalmechanisms which drive vortex evolution in complex vortex systems. Two cases will beinvestigated within the present study: a truncated cylinder (?xed and in sway motion) an"dthe KVLCC2 test case at di -erent drift angles (0?, 12? and 30?). The focus will be set onthe evolution of the coherent large vort"ices taking into account their interaction with eachother and their impact on the ship ow (e.g. the boundary layer and the wake ?eld). The experiments will be planned using CFD simulations and carried out in the windtunnel at TUHH using the PIV measurement system. The proposed test cases will lead todi -erent vortex systems. The analysis of these vortices will provide valuable insights intothe core workings of vortices and their interaction. Using the simple cylinder and the morecomplex hull geometry as well as di -ere"nt inow/ boundary conditions, the vortex creationmay be analysed for di -erent degrees of ow separation and vortex dimensions. Thi"s allowsthe investigations of parametric dependence of both vortex creation and their downstreambehaviour.
