CSP - Xth International Conference on Marine Bioinvasions
Abstract
Biological invasions~the movement of plants and animals outside their natural range byhumans~represent one of the most pervasive global threats to marine ecosystems.Increasing trade, transport, and tourism have greatly expanded the numbers of marineorganisms that are moved around the world and the locations receiving them. The International Conference on Marine Bioinvasions (ICMB) is an international forum inwhich scientists and policy makers from around the world meet to review currentchallenges in the global management of invasive marine organisms and to share newdevelopments in science and policy. The ICMB is convened every two years, regularly attracting between 140 to 200delegates from more than 20 countries in North America, Europe, Africa, Australia, NewZealand, and Asia. Recent ICMBs have been held in Vancouver (Canada), Barcelona(Spain) and Portland (OR, USA). This tenth conference will be the first ICMB meetingto be held in Latin America (with previous meetings in the USA, New Zealand, Spain, and Australia), and we are especially pleased that this meeting will be held in thePatagonian city of Puerto Madryn, Argentina, one of Latin America s leading centers ofexcellence for research on invasive species in the sea and coastal zones. The Conference operates on a not-for-profit basis under the aegis of the Society for theStudy of Marine Bioinvasions, Inc. in order to facilitate the exchange of ideas andresearch results among scientists and policy makers from around the world about marineinvasive species. These exchanges are intended to update and inform scientists andpolicy makers about the patterns of invasions, their effects, and how to reduce or controlthem.Conference organization and administration are managed by volunteer members of theScientific Steering Committee (SSC) and Local Organizing Committee (LOC).
