NICOP - Basic Icebreaking Study

Abstract

A study is proposed to investigate and understand the basic process of sea-ice breaking by ships. Theobjective of the study is to identify major process phenomena and find correlations betweenparameters especially those between the hull geometry, ice properties and motion characteristic of avessel. The study is planned to include theoretic investigation and physical model tests conducted inthe large ice model basin at the Hamburg Ship Model Basin (HSVA).The findings of the study can be used to??? improve principal understanding of the icebreaking process and the components of the iceresistance??? enhance quantity and quality of ship ??? ice interaction observations??? provide a database of results obtained under controlled lab conditionsFor the assessment of scaling similarities for problems addressed in this study and generalinvestigation of failure mechanisms a cooperation with the Institute for Ship Structural Design andAnalysis at the Hamburg University of Technology is proposed.
