NICOP - Improvement of Ocean Wave Ensemble Prediction Systems

Abstract

Operational Wave Ensemble Prediction Systems are typically based solely on wind field membersobtained from NWP models. Thus, initial condition perturbations and wave model errors are notincorporated and variations in the forecasts are introduced purely by means of the atmosphericensemble systems, which are usually based on singular vectors, breeding vectors and ensembletransform Kalman filters. In this project, modifications are introduced in the wind field membersobtained from the atmospheric ensemble predictions systems. These modifications are based onthree procedures: i) orthogonalization and decomposition of the ensemble wind field membersby dimensionality reduction methods; ii) Comparison or assimilation of high resolution remotesensing observational data and iii) Further calibration based on statistical database and/or modeluncertainty errors.
