NICOP - Green s function emergence through cross-correlation of shipping noise (GREEN)

Abstract

The cross-correlation of the underwater acoustic noise field at two locations is related to the timedomainGreen???s function (TDGF) between the two locations. ??he propagation conditions, thedistribution of noise sources, and the hydrophone locations have a significant influence on the partof the TDGF that can be reliably reconstructed through the cross-correlation procedure. Thepresent proposal focuses on studying the effect of propagation conditions on the result of the crosscorrelationprocedure when the noise sources are travelling ships, i.e. shipping noise. Varioussound velocity profiles and hydrophone setups will be considered and, further, the effects ofmooring motion will be studied. The aim is to understand the effect that propagation conditionshave on the cross-correlation procedure and point to the potential advantages of certain areas forthe conduct of passive tomography experiments.
