CSP - International Congress of Neuroethology 2018 (www.ICN2018.com)

Abstract

The International Congress of Neuroethology (ICN) is a biologically-biased scientificmeeting held every two years. The host organisation, The International Society forNeuroethology (ISN - www.neuroethology.org) is an academic organization composedof scientists from around the world whose research is focussed on uncovering theneural mechanisms underlying natural behaviours. Such research includes molecular, cellular, whole organism and systems approaches and is distinct from bio-medicalneuroscience in that it is usually directed at animals ???in the real world??? rather than in thelaboratory. This proposal seeks funding to underpin certain aspects of ICN 2018(www.ICN2018.com) as detailed below. The Congress will take place at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) inBrisbane Australia, from July 15-20, 2018. The BCEC was the site chosen to hostPresident Obama and other world leaders for the 2014 G20 meeting and has beenvoted the world???s best convention centre (www.bcec.com.au). Meeting rooms hold fromabout 150 to 600 participants and all posters (300+ expected) will be displayed for thewhole conference in attractive breakout areas on the Plaza level(www.bcec.com.au/rooms-spaces/plaza-level).There will be 9 plenary lectures from field leaders, a Presidential Symposium alsocomposed of neuroethological luminaries and 13 Invited Symposia focussed around afield-leader but designed to showcase young and mid-career scientists with a realbalance from both sexes and many countries. A further 3-4 Contributed Symposia willspecifically focus on young researchers and form the basis of Young Researcherawards handed out every year by the society. Further to these oral presentations, weexpect between 250-300 Poster presentations and will have these displayed throughoutthe conference (not on separate days) and encourage them to be used as focal pointsfor discussion during any of the breaks but with two long dedicated poster sessionsduring the conference. We expect a total attendance of 450-500.ICN2018 has also attracted 6 Satellite meetings of various sizes. Australian AnimalBehaviour (ASSAB) is a mini-conference unto its self, held every year and focussed onbehaviour of animals in Australia. It is expected that around 150 delegates will attendASSAB and many will stay on for the main ICN meeting. The others are morespecialised and around 50-150 individuals per satellite and include subjects on:Zebrafish, Bio-acoustics and Sonar, Herpetology, Electric fish and Neural Activity.
