CSP - 12th International Conference on Sandwich Structures
Abstract
The 12th International Conference on Sandwich Structures (ICSS-12) will be held at EcolePolytechnique F??d??rale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland from 19 to 22 August 2018. The ICSSconferences represent the largest and most prestigious conference event covering the general topicof sandwich structures in the fields of naval, aerospace, automotive, mechanical and civilengineering and architecture.ICSS-12 intends to provide a forum for world-outstanding leaders in sandwich structures for thepresentation, exchange and discussion regarding the latest results of their research. This forumaims to provide a state-of-the-art overview of the field, identify gaps of current knowledge anddevelop a view for the future directions of research and development in sandwich structures.Approximately 100 papers will be presented at the Conference. Presentation of papers will take placeduring three days in two parallel sessions, making a total of 24 sessions. The following sessions havebeen planned based on the extended abstracts received: ONR Special Sessions, Delamination / Disbond,Impact, Thermal effects, Design, Modeling, NDE, Core materials, Manufacturing and Applications. TheICSS-12 technical program will also include four plenary lectures.Sandwich structures are extensively used in naval structures, where both high structural efficiencyand lightweight design are required. Sandwich structures for naval applications typically consistof high-modulus composite face sheets bonded to a low density polymeric foam core. Thesestructures display complex and interacting failure modes; due to a lack of quantitative informationregarding their mechanical response and failure modes, large safety factors are used nowadays fortheir design. Research on sandwich structures thus remains of primary interest for US Navy andthe Office of Naval Research (ONR). ICSS-12, providing an international forum for researchersand practitioners to exchange outstanding research within marine sandwich construction, and theConference Proceedings, which will be made publicly available to the scientific community, willbe useful for US Navy and ONR to advance towards a more effective design of durable andaffordable naval structures.
