CSP - Metamaterials 2018 The Twelfth International Congress on Artificial Materials for Novel Wave Phenomena

Abstract

IntroductionThe Twelfth International Congress on Artificial Materials for Novel Wave Phenomena ???Metamaterials???2018, will comprise a 4-day Conference (27???30 August), and a 2-day Doctoral School (31August???1 September). It is organized by the METAMORPHOSE VI AISBL (www.metamorphose-vi.org)and hosted by Aalto University (Espoo, Finland). The scientific contributions will be recorded on a privatepage of the METAMORPHOSE VI AISBL website and distributed to the participants. Moreover, a courseof the European Doctoral School on Metamaterials operated by the Metamorphose Virtual Institute willbe held in conjunction with the Congress (31 August - 1 September 2018). This event will represent aunique opportunity for students and young researchers to get exposure to the latest advancements in thefield of metamaterials and to meet the leading experts in this rapidly developing field. The course will befocused on emerging engineered materials with broken time-reversal symmetry. Strong current interestin this topic is motivated by new possibilities to engineer and optimize nonreciprocal response of materialsand open up possibilities to create new types of nonreciprocal devices. We will discuss the use ofnonlinear, active, moving, and time-modulated structures, extending the metamaterials paradigm into thefour-dimensional space. Information about the School will also be posted at the website of the EuropeanDoctoral Programs on Metamaterials ??? EUPROMETA (http://school.metamorphose-vi.org/). All studentparticipants are invited to enter competition for the best student paper. A few travel grants will be providedfor students and delegates presenting oral papers. Objectives and backgroundThe Congress will provide a unique forum to share the latest results of the metamaterials research andbring together the engineering, physics, and material science communities working in the field of artificialelectromagnetic materials and their applications at microwaves, millimeter waves, terahertz, and opticalfrequencies, as well as in acoustics, mechanics, hydrodynamics and thermodynamics. This Congressfollows the success of Metamaterials 2007-2017 and continues the traditions of the highly successfulseries of International Conferences on Complex Media and Metamaterials (Bianisotropics) and RomeInternational Workshops on Metamaterials and Special Materials for Electromagnetic Applications andTelecommunications. In particular, Metamaterials???2018 will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the series, bringing the Congress back to Espoo, where it all started in 1993 (Bi-isotropics 93 - Workshop on NovelMicrowave Materials, Helsinki University of Technology, Finland). The Conference programme willinclude four plenary talks given by the following eminent researchers in the field of metamaterials: NaderEngheta, University of Pennsylvania; Martin van Hecke, Leiden University/AMOLF; Stefano Maci,University of Siena; Arno Rauschenbeutel, Technische Universitat Wien.Keynote talks will address hot topics in metamaterials research and leading experts will present invitedtalks, which will review the state-of-the-art and address the latest advancements in their respective areas. The technical oral talks and interactive poster sessions will encompass a broad range of themes, fromfundamental electromagnetic theory of metamaterials and complex electromagnetic media to innovativemicrowave and optical devices. Moreover, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the seminal paper byViktor Veselago ???The electrodynamics of substances with simultaneously negative values of ?? and ?????, aspecial event will be organized, including short talks reflecting on the early history of metamaterialsresearch and exposition of metamaterials samples.
