3rd LAMLA Workshop - Listening for Aquatic Mammals in Latin America - Advancing bioacoustics and passive acoustic monitoring in Latin America
Abstract
The field of study of bioacoustics and the application of Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) methods applied to aquatic mammals have grown worldwide. Advances in detection, classification, localization, density estimation, and behavioural studies of aquatic mammals using sound have been accomplished in North America and Europe as a consequence of dedicated workshops and meetings. Several researchers in Latin America are using PAM at their study sites, but at present there is no setting for researchers to exchange information and explore collaborations at a regional level. To respond to this challenge, we have already organized 2 acoustic workshops with ONRG support, the first in Brazil (June 2016, 45 participants) and the second in Chile (November 2016, 48 participants), called “Listening to Aquatic Mammals in Latin America” (www.lamla2016.com). These workshops have received participants from Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Panama, and Ecuador. This proposal requests funds to continue this work and organize a 3rd workshop during the Latin American Aquatic Mammal Conference (SOLAMAC) to be held in Lima Peru, in November 2018. In the long-term, this is part of our effort to provide a permanent forum for developing collaboration, research and technical know-how within Latin America in marine passive acoustics and to have the LAMLA workshop be a permanent fixture at SOLAMAC. This third LAMLA workshop in Peru will provide a forum for oral presentations by students and researchers on their work as in previous workshops, but will also provide training sessions to participants in passive acoustic data analysis, with the open source R software. The latter is a necessity in Latin America that was strongly voiced during the first and second LAMLA workshops. We will also have a key note speaker, Dr. Jay Barlow (NOAA), who is a world expert in the field of marine mammal acoustics and who’s research is also supported by ONR in the United States. For this workshop, SOLAMAC has provided us with a one-day slot on the 4th of November, to run our workshop prior to the SOLAMAC conference. Here, we request funds for the organizing committee to travel and stay in Lima Peru prior to SOLAMAC to organize and run the workshop. Our organizing committee is made up by: Dr. Artur Andriolo (Federal University of Juiz de Fora, Brazil), Dr. Renata Sousa-Lima (Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil), Dr. Susannah Buchan (Universidad de Concepcion, Chile), Dr. Julie Patris (Universite de Toulon, France), Dr. Franck Malige (Universite de Toulon, France), and Dr. Maria Isabel Gon?alves (State University of Santa Cruz, Brazil).
