CSP 3rd Latin American Symposium on Water Waves
Abstract
Latin American coastal areas span approximately 50,000 km of shoreline where most of the important ports, touristic locations and strategic ecosystems are found. Deep waters are located at two of the most important oceans, the Atlantic and Pacific, as well as on the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea. Wave climate conditions for most of the Latin American countries are governed by migrations of the Intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and associated winds, annual variability and macroclimatic phenomena such as ENSO, hurricanes and typhoons activity.During last decades, research about the influence of climatic conditions and affectation to coastal and deep waters have increased in Latin America. This improvement has occurred thanks to efforts made by several institutions, including universities, research institutes, private companies and the navy of each country, with the generous auspice of international partners. In that vein, fostering events that create discussion panels and promote future collaborations among researchers of institutions in different Latin American countries becomes crucial. The aim of the Third Latin American Symposium on Water Waves (LatWaves), to be held in Medellin, Colombia, is to create a venue that promotes interactions and discussions among Latin American scientists with an interest in water waves. The symposium therefore will invite contributions related to the theory and observations of water waves broadly defined. However, specific applications, such as wave energy extraction for alternative power generation, will not be particularly addressed. The objectives of the Third LatWaves are: (1) to continue the promotion of a meeting on water waves of high scientific quality with focus on Latin American researchers; (2) to foster collaborations among Latin American researchers on water waves; and (3) to enhance the inclusion of early-career scientists and underrepresented groups in discussions pertaining water waves research in Latin America. To fulfil these objectives, the Third LatWaves will intend to diminish the gap among well-established researchers, early career scientists, and underrepresented groups via plenary and informal talks, and a discussion panel in a high scientific quality meeting with a low registration cost. The meeting is thus expected to be conducted in plenary, with a discussion session at the end of the third day. This session will look for identifying key topics in Latin American wave research and their international relevance by answering: (1) what are the current, most important research topics for the Latin American wave research? and (2) what is the relevance of those topics for water waves research internationally? In that vein, support requested to ONRG results crucial since travel expenses are usually prohibitive for many Latin American participants, especially early-career scientists and students.
