Workshop Synthetic Biology & Energetic Materials
Abstract
Synthetic biology offers the potential to revolutionize chemical synthesis and manufacturing. The science in this area is progressing rapidly, and we have initiated several programs to explore the area. Initial investigations are underway toward development of a tool kit for producing energetic materials, and further research and development efforts are under consideration. To date there is a lack of understanding what the potential is of exploiting synthetic biology to create novel energetic materials. The potential is to deliver a groundbreaking, disruptive capability to the Navy and Marines to produce energetic materials at forward facing installations, rather than spending millions on delivering energetic materials through cumbersome logistics. TNO has been actively engaged in working on developing novel energetic materials. To that end, the Office of Naval Research Global and the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program are collaborating to support a workshop on applications of synthetic biology toward the production of energetic materials. The workshop will be hosted in The Hague from the 14th to the 16th of November 2018 by TNO (The Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research), and will include participation from notable US, European and Asian researchers. Assured C3, Battlespace Awareness, and Integrated Fires -CNOG~20 PriorityThe goals of the workshop are to:~ Define synthetic biology in terms of its application to novel chemical structures and explore possibilities to use synthetic biology or other green methods for the production of energetic materials.~ Describe the current state of energetic materials requirements.~ Discuss how synthetic biology programs can impact verified energetic material requirements.~ Produce a report that collects all of the above and provides guidance on future research and development directions. For this workshop to be successful the appropriate subject matter experts must be available to attend in order to convey their research activities and also to interact with their counterparts.
