THE SINGAPORE AUV CHALLENGE 2019

Abstract

The Singapore AUV Challenge 2019 Workshop and CompetitionAbstract: The Singapore AUV Challenge is a competition cum workshop for internationaltertiary students with an objective to educate them the intricacies of marine robotics bybuilding autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) and competing in a swimming poolenvironment. The students form teams and build autonomous underwater vehiclescomplying to the competition requirements and compete to go through a series of tasksdesigned to challenge both their technical skills as well as their creativity. As there are nospecific course offered to students in marine robotics in many universities, this outside classroom activity is targeted at generating enough interest and possibly provide a career path inautonomous marine vehicles for interested students. The students learn about differentsensors that form part of the vehicle and how to integrate them for retrieving relevantinformation. The students also learn how to use optical and acoustic navigational aids toachieve the tasks assigned to them. Since 2013 this competition has seen enormous growthin terms of international participation. The last competition held in Mar 2018 saw 27 studentteams from across nine countries comprising more than 250 students participating. Theavenue also provides a highly interactive environment for students coming from differentcountries in exchanging both technical and cultural information. The event also helps togenerate entrepreneurial skills in the students and also marketing skills to generate enoughsponsorship for building the vehicle and also to cover part of their expenses towardsparticipating in the competition.A workshop is also organized as part of this event, where the students are given anopportunity to interact with world-renowned marine roboticists. These international expertsare invited to give presentations and share their experiences in building and testingautonomous vehicles inside the lab and also testing them out in the ocean. They also takequestions from the students during a panel discussion session including about opportunitiesthat exists for the students with relevant skills in marine autonomous vehicles. The studentsalso get to share the design of their vehicle and the journey they went through while designingthe system with an invited audience. There is also an opportunity for the students to interactwith industry experts and explore career opportunities. Cash prizes are awarded to the topthree teams and also in other different categories such as innovative design. The event brings out a report on the competition which is published in the IEEEOceanographic Engineering Societys BEACON Newsletter.
