Towards clinical trial of HARPER* for Internal Fixation (*Healing Assessment Routine Protocol for Early Return to Service)
Abstract
6.1/6.2 Split Funds justification:- Basic 6.1: Extends the concept of Structure Health Monitoring (SHM) tothe area of bone health recovery, particularly to healing assessment ofinternally fixated long bones- Option 1 with 6.2: Quantify the effects of soft-tissue on theextracorporeal healing assessment device where scientific findings(outcomes) will be applied to complement the clinical trial of this healingassessment capability at The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne.SOWThe project titled ~HARPER* for Internal Fixation (*Healing Assessment Routine Protocol forEarly Return to Service)~ Project N00014-16-1-2882 has created new understandings inextending SHM concepts into healing assessment of internally fixated long bones. Theoutcomes from this project has led to engineering principles that can be potentially integratedinto an extra-corporeal device that provide a quantitative non-radiative healing assessment ofhealing of long bones. The work proposed in this document will focus on the scientific aspects to provide fundamentalfindings to quantify the effects of soft-tissue on the healing assessment methodology. Thesescientific findings will be used to complement a clinical trial of this healing assessmentcapability at The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne. This clinical trial is funded by the MonashInstitute of Medical Engineering (MIME). One of the important scientific/engineeringprinciple that is key to this trial are to: (a) to quantify the effects of soft-tissue on the extracorporealhealing assessment device, (b) the strategy(ies) required to mitigate the soft-tissueinfluence on the ability to accurately quantify the state of healing of an internally fixated longbone. The work proposed in this document will only focus on the finite element analyses andexperiments that do not involve human subjects. The outcomes will be embodied in an extracorporealdevice. The clinical trial involving this device will be supported by MIME.
