WORKSHOP: Quantum devices for non-classical light generation and manipulation
Abstract
The PI proposes to host a workshop titled ~Quantum devices for non-classical light generation and manipulation~~ to be held at the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture in Eric, Sicily, Sept. 30th -Oct. 5th, 2019, The objective of this proposed workshop will be to review the fundamental optical and quantum optical properties of single photons and photon pairs, such as coherence, purity, indistinguishability and entanglement. It is necessary to study these properties in order to properly understand the significant potential ~of light~ for quantum information applications. Special emphasis will be placed on resonant excitation schemes of excitons and bi-excitons in semiconductor quantum dots, as they provide photon wave packets with superior properties. The workshop will also cover the latest progress being made by the research community on the generation of single and entangled photon states under different resonant excitation schemes such as continuous wave and pulsed excitation, rapid adiabatic passage, spin-flip Raman transitions, two-photon excitation and phonon-assisted excitation methods for excitons and biexcitons. The pros and cons of the different methods will also be d-iscussed.To ensure the success of the workshop, the PI proposes to bring together experts from different fields of quantum technology to illustrate and debate several building blocks for real-world quantum applications, giving a complete and fair overview of different systems with their pros and cons. Furthermore, an overview of recent significant developments in the field of non-classical light generation and manipulation will be covered. Topics and speakers are to be chosen from among the world leading experts, and the discussions will be structured to enable cross exchange of knowledge among different fields. Application fields to be covered include quantum computation, quantum communication, quantum information and quantum sensing.
