Workshop on non-Kolmogorov turbulence and associated phenomena
Abstract
2019 Workshop on non-Kolmogorov turbulence and associated phenomena is planned to be a premier event that will bring together top world researchers working on various aspects of optical turbulence including prominent scientists from US, Germany, Netherlands, Australia and other countries. The goal is to establish international multi-discipline research collaboration to investigate non-Kolmogorov turbulence (NKT). The NKT encompasses all models which differ from the usual -11/3 power spectrum slope of the turbulent quantities. It is highly important to Navy~s operations as its occurrences were observed in parallel path propagation relevant to shipboard imaging, free space optical communications, and directed energy applications. Another important example of NKT is underwater optical turbulence, which is driven by temperature and salinity fluctuations and which severely impacts underwater optical communication and imaging. Currently, NKT processes are poorly understood because of limited interactions with the meteorological community and lack a deeper insight into its genesis and characteristics. As a result NKT mitigation capabilities are very limited. To support the workshop goals, participants from a number of scientific fields are invited, in particular optical scientists (theoreticians and field experimenters), meteorologists, experts in fluid mechanics, and oceanographers.
