Transformer-Less Topologies and Control Techniques for Medium-Voltage Battery Energy Storage Systems

Abstract

The proposed project will develop circuit topologies and associated control that facilitates integration of multiple battery chemistries through use of battery sub-unit connected directly into the dc-ac conversion stage. This approach allows each battery sub-unit to dynamically connect and disconnect to the external circuit using an H-bridge. This converter structure uses a new modular multilevel converter (MMC) topology. Where as much work have been done to use MMC topology to develop high voltage converters (up to 800kV), this proposal is novel in exploring the use of this topology in developing a new type of battery power converter. This work can open up new concepts to traditional power converter designs, and potentially offer a significant technical advancement in battery converter design.
