IQOE Workshop on Ocean Sound Monitoring Standards

Abstract

The IQOE working group on standardization proposes to organize a one-day workshop with the purpose of developing IQOE guidelines for the observation of ocean sound. The workshop aims to recommend best practices for experiments, observation, reporting and other means to ensure that results are comparable and can be integrated into standardize data across large temporal and spatial scales. In 2018, the group released a first inventory of existing standards. It shows there exists no national (ANSI) nor international (ISO or IEC) standard for measuring, processing, reporting of managing ocean ambient sound data. Nor are any of the standards bodies developing such a standard. Harmonization and standardization of methods would facilitate inter-comparison of measurements in the future. The funding requested is to pay for labor of the organizer, which is unusual for a CSP grant. Other sources of funds will cover the usual expenses, e.g. funding from the Rjikswaterstaat (Dutch ministry for infrastructure and waterways) will provide the venue, facilities and lunch. Since JASCO is not a university, but a for-profit company, it has less discretion to provide free staff time, therefore, explicitly identifying and funding the organizer s labor is, in this case, justifiable.
