Security and Resilience for Emerging Synthetic Biology and Biotechnology Threats Workshop

Abstract

This workshop proposes to bring together top scholars in synthetic biology risk assessment, management, and communication to discuss potential biosecurity governing strategies and offer perspectives for collaboration in oversight and future regulatory guidance. We will hold a NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme Advanced Research Workshop in at EPFL (Swiss Federal School of Technology), Lausanne Switzerland from 7-10 July 2019 on the subject of Security for Synthetic Biology and Biotechnology Threats. This workshop will bring together top scholars in synthetic biology and biotechnology risk assessment, management, and communication to discuss potential biosecurity governing strategies and offer perspectives for collaboration in oversight and future regulatory guidance. Participants will represent science, engineering and decision-making, and come from the US, Europe, Asia, and Oceania, to collaborate on opportunities, challenges and solutions with respect to making biosecurity protocols better capable of identifying and managing biosecurity threats without unnecessarily preventing the further innovative potential of such biotechnologies. Members of the organizing and scientific committees have active collaborations in NATO Partner countries, and many of the invited participants are expected to establish close working relationships.
