ASEAN Smart Grid Congress 5

Abstract

ASEAN Smart Grid Congress (ASGC) is a major forum in Southeast Asia for professionals in smart grid technology and policy to meet annually. The meeting rotates among ASEAN member institutions to host in their countries to update and strengthen collaboration every year. The last four (4) meetings were held in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and intended Indonesia. However due to security issues, last years ASGC was moved from Indonesia to Thailand. 2) The 5th ASEAN Smart Grid Congress (ASGC5) this year will be held in Iloilo City, Philippines on 23-25 October 2019. The main objective of this congress remains to be the sharing of ideas and exchange knowledge to promote the development of smart grid in ASEAN countries. ONRG support aligns with the long-standing National strategy of developing strong international partnerships. Strong strategic partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region is also a key directive of the National Defense Strategy. ONR efforts in the last 5 years has led to multiple MOUs, with HNEI as U.S. signatory, and direct ties with Deputy Minister-level decision makers in countries such as Thailand and Vietnam. Smart Grids also has technical relevance to the ONR S&T priority of Operational Endurance. Continued engagements with ASEAN countries will provide technical awareness of Smart/Micro-grid developments in the Indo-Pacific Region and better understanding of the local conditions and challenges of implementing Renewable Energy micro-grids in these regions. In future Indo-Pacific conflicts, operational logistics will be a challenge. Fuel and energy supplies in such vast dispersed locals will demand more sustainable energy generation provided by Renewable generation and micro-grids to manage these new sources of generation
