Advanced Methods for Blind Extraction of Independent Sources from Multi-Sensor Observations
Abstract
Convince me that this is innovative S&T Prior project derived the mathematical basis for extending blind source separation (BSS) methods from stationary configurations to kinematic ones. This new project will test and evaluate the algorithms via experimental program with moving sources (in-air, on ground) and fixed receivers (microphones). Performance will be analyzed to refine algorithms for greater accuracy and robustness. This test in real-world environment will provide valuable knowledge to NSWC Carderock Division researchers working on COLUMBIA-Class risk-reduction efforts. b. Relevance: Why does ONR/NRE/DON care? This work will enable faster and more accurate identification, localization, and characterization of sources of transient vibrations. Dr. Matt Craun, Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division, attests that this work will aid risk-reduction efforts for the COLUMBIA-Class submarine. Dr. John Muench, ONR Code 33, is co-funding the project as part of his Own Ship Acoustic Monitoring program (which is part of the COLUMBIA-Class risk-reduction effort). c. With what PO and ONR Code has this been coordinated? Other NRE? Other DoD? Dr. John Muench -- ONR Code 33 (co-funder) Dr. Matt Craun -- NSWC Carderock Division Code 72 d. Desired outcome 1. (Experimental) test and evaluation of time-dependent algorithm for source identification, localization, and characterization, and for source-receiver transmission path characterization. 2. Publication in technical journal with acknowledgement of ONR Global and ONR Code 33 funding. 3. Delivery of MATLAB-based codes to NSWC Carderock Division for use in ONR Code 33 program Own-Ship Acoustic Monitoring, which is part of COLUMBIA-Class risk-reduction effort (led by Dr. John Muench, ONR Code 33) Potential Naval relevance and contribution to the ONR and Department of Navy mission, and the Chief of Naval Operations Priority Area: Strategic Deterrence - CNOG-20 Priority Availability of funds: Only ONR Global Technical Director can answer that. I affirm the funding level fits within the allotment assigned to me.
