LATIN AMERICAN PHYSICS OF ESTUARIES AND COASTAL OCEANS
Abstract
LAPECO is an international conference inspired by the Physics of Estuaries andCoastal Seas (PECS) biennial meeting held in US, Europe, Asia and Australia since1978. The objective is to gather students, engineers, oceanographers, geophysicists, geologists, mathematicians and other researchers of Latin America interested in thedynamics of the coastal ocean and estuaries.LAPECO s first meeting will be held from November 18 to 22, 2019 at the FederalUniversity of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Florian~polis, SC, Southern Brazil. The event isorganized in Short Courses (Nov 18-19) and Conference Presentations (Nov 20-21-22).Short Courses have 16 hours and will present topics relevant to the analysis ofoceanographic data, scientific programming and numerical modelling. Conferencepresentations (talks and posters) should focus on estuarine and coastal environments, including studies of circulation, sediment transport, numerical modelling, water quality, wave dynamics and topics related to marine energy. A total of 114 abstracts werealready received in June 2019. Accepted abstracts will be published in LAPECO sConference Proceedings. The event will gather coastal physical ocean scientists working in Latin Americato review the current state of knowledge in this part of the world. This will be the firsttime that these scientists will gather and have the opportunity to build synergies andresearch networks focused on the coastal ocean. Some topics that could be relevant tothe Navy mission are: frontal coherent structures, turbulent processes, coastal sedimenttransport (cohesive and non-cohesive), compound flooding (river-ocean interactions),plume dynamics, and morphodynamical changes in coastal environments. A specialissue on an Elsevier journal will collect selected studies that address such topics andmore. This meeting plants a seed of what is expected to become a biennial gathering. Agoal of LAPECO is to highlight new studies on physical processes in the coastalenvironment. Many of these studies will very likely support the naval mission ofreconnaissance, rescue and defence operations.
