5th Workshop on Sequential Monte Carlo Methods (SMC 2020)
Abstract
TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVESSequential Monte Carlo (SMC) methods, also known as particle filters or particlemethods, have become popular and powerful tools for computational inference incomplex probabilistic models used in many and varied fields and applications. Theresearch community includes practitioners ant theoreticians at the intersection ofstatistics, computer science, electrical engineering, and applied mathematics. The SMC workshops can be traced back to Oxford in 2006, with subsequent meetings atWarwick (2012), Paris (2015) and Uppsala (2017). It is currently a midsize workshop, forwhich we expect between 90 and 130 attendees, including senior academics, researchersfrom the industry as well as PhD students and young postdocs. As such, the main aims ofthe meeting are:o to bring together researchers developing and using SMC methods in a diversity ofscientific and engineering fields, both in academia and the industry, ando to open up the field to researchers and users who are new to SMC methods. Wewill emphasize the interaction of SMC with related areas of research (such asmachine learning or data science) where computational inference plays a key role.
