Artificial Intelligence to Simulate Earths Stratosphere

Abstract

We investigate the applicability of artificial intelligence to improve our forecasts of theEarths stratosphere. Stratospheric dynamics have been shown to be important forpredictions on both weather and climate timescales. Examples of these are influence ofsudden stratospheric warmings on the troposphere and evolution of ozone influencesanthropogenic forcings. Several of the key physical processes that govern the dynamics atthese altitudes are unable to be resolved by the model resolution and are insteadparameterized by schemes with limited complexity. These schemes transfer momentumbetween the troposphere and stratosphere through the breaking of gravity waves.
