Global OCEANS 2020 Singapore - U.S. Gulf Coast

Abstract

The OCEANS Conference and Exposition, dubbed as OCEANS, is co-sponsored by the IEEEOceanic Engineering Society (OES) and the Marine Technology Society (MTS). OCEANS is a biannualevent for scientists, engineers, students, and technologists, that offers a platform forpresenting the latest findings, results, and applications in marine-related research. The prolonged COVID-19 outbreak impedes the organization of in-person OCEANS 2020Singapore and OCEANS 2020 Gulf Coast. The sponsors have hence decided to have a jointvirtual conference Global OCEANS 2020: Singapore U.S. Gulf Coast, during October 530,2020.The virtual conference is expected to attract approximately 1000 delegates and more than500 professionally reviewed research papers discussing problems ranging from underwatercommunications in challenging environments, acoustic propagation in littoral waters to fieldmarine robotics. Many of these topics are also relevant to Navies around the world as it mayfind applications in naval operations. There will be 4 to 6 plenaries, an equal number of panelsessions and 7 tutorials on special interest topics. Each plenary and panel session will befollowed by live question and answers sessions. About 2030 exhibitors are expected toshowcase their state-of-the-art solutions/products to registrants. Virtual interactive sessionswill be offered for attendees to post their questions for the tutorial presenters to address. Two Poster Competitions (one each by Singapore and Gulf Coast) will be organized toencourage research students to showcase the outcome of their research during theconference. All these activities will be achieved using a virtual conference platform.Organizing the Global OCEANS 2020 Virtual Conference not only requires solid preparationsbut also relies on various technologies (live streaming, virtual platforms, etc.) which could becostly and challenging to manage. Unlike the traditional in-person conference scheduled over3 or 4 days, virtual conferences are organised over a longer period to cover variouspresentations and interests of participants from different parts of the world (different timezones). We are submitting this proposal to partially cover the cost of virtual conferenceplatform and associated logistics as well as part of the registration costs for the studentresearchers, who are offered free registration. The conference offers an opportunity for participants to present and discuss their latestresearch results in all areas of oceanic engineering, science, and technology. In line with ourtheme for Global OCEANS 2020, we wish to highlight important results in smart marinetechnologies, which mitigate marine environmental impacts as compared to existingapproaches. The conference also offers opportunities for the naval personnel to learn andunderstand some of the state-of-the-art science and technologies being applied inunderwater detection and communication. Papers selected and presented in the technicalsessions are published in the IEEE Xplore database. There are opportunities for theparticipants to interact virtually with students, researchers, working professionals, andindustry experts from all around the world leading to research collaborations.
